Elephants of Sri Lanka
Elephants; One of Sri Lanka’s key wildlife attraction, have been revered for centuries in Asia, playing an essential role in the continent’s culture, religion and war. They are also play a critical role in maintaining the region’s forests. Asian elephants are the continent’s largest terrestrial mammals. They can reach 6.4m in length and 3m at the shoulder and weigh as much as 5 tones. There are three subspecies of Asian elephants – the Indian, Sumatran and Sri Lankan. The Indian has the widest range and accounts for the majority of the remaining elephants on the continent. The Sri Lankan is physically the largest of the subspecies, and also the darkest in colour.
The Sri Lankan elephant population is now largely restricted to the dry zone in the north, east and southeast of Sri Lanka. Elephants are present in Udawalawe National Park, Yala National Park, Lunugamvehera National Park, Wilpattu National Park and Minneriya National Park but also live outside protected areas. It is estimated that Sri Lanka has the highest density of elephants in Asia with Udawalawe National Park being renowned for guaranteed elephant sightings throughout the year. During the dry season, Minneriya National Park becomes the stage for one of the most spectacular wildlife events in the world – The Minneriya Elephant Gathering, the largest gathering of elephants anywhere in Asia.
Sigiriya Rock
Sigiriya, also called Lion Rock or Lion Mountain, site in central Sri Lanka consisting of the ruins of an ancient stronghold that was built in the late 5th century CE on a remarkable monolithic rock pillar. The rock, which is so steep that its top overhangs the sides, rises to an elevation of 1,144 feet (349 metres) above sea level and is some 600 feet (180 metres) above the surrounding plain.
Stilit Fishing
Stilt Fishing is one of the most interesting traditional fishing methods of Sri Lanka. Records indicate that it came into being just after World War II. Though stilt fishermen make the activity seem easy and comfortable; stilt fishing requires much skill and balance. A vertical pole with an attached crossbar is embedded into the sea floor among the shallows, or on a riverbed. The crossbar allows the fishermen to be seated a couple of meters above the water causing minimal shadows on the water and hence little to no disturbance amongst the sea life.
